Dead by Daylight is one of the most popular multiplayer games around, but if you have little interest in the online gaming space, then its developer Behaviour Interactive may be a relatively unknown quantity to you. To combat this disconnect, the company has employed other studios to create their own, unique take on the universe. The Casting of Frank Stone from Supermassive Games is first in line, which plays like everything else the team has produced over the past decade.
With a focus on story and how your choices shape the journey through to its conclusion, you'll control a few different characters across three time periods: 1963, 1980, and 2024. Linking the three years together is a cult classic horror film with a monster and some dark secrets inside, and the game depicts the fallout when three people carrying copies of the movie are brought under one roof. The game has been written so it can be enjoyed without any knowledge of Dead by Daylight, but even for those fanatics — who will pick up on subtle references — there's very little to get your teeth stuck into.
The Casting of Frank Stone plays like something made before Supermassive Games evolved its gameplay capabilities. It's incredibly basic, with very little environmental interaction and a lot of setting reuse — particularly in the latter half. Across a roughly five-hour playthrough, the characters do little to really leave their mark or make you care for them, resulting in a narrative that fails to resonate. It feels like you're simply going through the motions of what it means to be a Supermassive Games... game rather than an experience born out of love for the source text.
You'll make a few choices to impact the plot. You'll rummage around rooms to find a few interactable objects and collectibles. The Casting of Frank Stone is just like any other title out of Supermassive Games, except without a lot of the depth and charm. It's average in just about every facet — even the visuals are worse than what the developer is known for.
We generally love the marriage between story and gameplay that Supermassive Games creates, but without the many advancements of The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Casting of Frank Stone feels far too simple. With an uninteresting narrative to boot, the first effort to expand the Dead by Daylight universe is a misfire.

These narrative horror games aren’t necessarily my cup of tea but I’m surprised by a 5. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by The Man of Medan, so was low-key following this one.
As I said in the review, I usually really like the story-focused Supermassive games, but this one just didn't land for me whatsoever. Maybe you'll enjoy it more than me, though! Feel free to copy me in for any questions.
I love these kinda games but this one looked uninteresting. I forgot it was even coming out. Still I was hoping it would be a good time killer if nothing else. But an uninteresting story is basically this game being rendered useless since that is the whole point.
Yes it's reviewing better elsewhere with one site calling it supermassives finest work. I remember the quarry review on this site getting a similar score and it transpired the man who wrote that review was on a tight schedule and had to play it all at once pretty much. I would argue that a situation like that would impact the game more-with the annoying bits seeming more annoying and such simply because of the situation the reviewer found himself in having to consume it all at once. Most gamers wouldn't play a game like this like that-more probably taking it in a smaller hour or two increments. I do believe factors like this can effect how one enjoys a game and I don't know if there's even a solution for it but I do feel it's a point worth consideration.
I wish they´d attempt something more involved like Eternal Darkness, instead of these dull walking simulators
@Gravytrain I reviewed the game over the course of three days, every time playing roughly one to two hours, just so you know.
Yes fair enough. Just remembered the quarry reviewer saying that in the comments and wondered if a similar thing had happened here seems I was incorrect.
Sound like Sony's right game for PS+ monthly picks...
I might pick this up when it's on a deep sale. You can usually have a good time with a Supermassive Games game, even the average ones.
will wait for other reviews push square review scores frankly arnt all that reliable
The PC demo didn't wow me, visually it was decent enough but movement and animations felt far more basic than the Dark Pictures games and The Quarry. I also agree on the lack of interaction with the environment, there were a couple of hidden things to find but most things couldn't be touched or moved and most doors were just textures.
7 out of 10 on sister site Pure Xbox.
Ugh. I really want to love these games. The formula should be perfect but almost every one of these releases is filled with terrible writing, poor acting and dull choices
I really am baffled by who green lights all this *****. Surely there must be someone at the top of Super massive with just an ounce of quality control about the projects they greenlight
With Supermassive struggling to match the quality standards of Until Dawn maybe Sony was right to turn to Ballistic Moon.
@LiamCroft
Hey Liam, I have a couple of questions. Why didn’t you mention the feature (after the first playthrough) in which you can jump to certain scenes where it let you see in how many other ways it can play out. I find this quite good.
Second question, did you play through the game a second time?
@Yagami Eternal Darkness just flat out needs a either a remake or a sequal as that game is truly a hidden gem
@trev666 @Gravytrain I'm not one to defend push square very often and especially not this reviewer, however the suggestion that this is an anomoly review is literally false based on the data. There are at least eight 5 or 6 reviews thus far with only 20 posted. That's nearly half of the reviews ews suggesting the game is mediocre. The remaining are much higher. When the divide is this noticeable history tends to prove that the reality is usually that the game is mid at best.
Either way when 5s are at play and the average is 69, you have to read several opinions and take gameplay and demos into account, as it's clearly got significant negatives for some, yet they may not be negative for you.
for most this game is going to be pretty garbo, although with how little these things are games and how Niche the genre and fan base is for this B movie cosplay, I suspect those folks have beergoggles on in terms of their opinions of another opportunity for such.
@KundaliniRising333 69 average on metacritic from 21 critic reviews isnt terrible its average. higher average score on Metacritic than concord but yet concord scored higher on here.
push square always seem to score games differently than the norm
@KundaliniRising333 it's the lowest I couldn't find another 5. Couple sixes and a seven gamer and game bible positively gush about it as do bloody disgusting eurogamer 3/5 which I guess you could call a six the general voices iv read seem to be more complimentary. Not that it matters I only say it to contest your assertion that it's overwhelmingly negative. If this or any other reviewer disagrees that's fine too we are all allowed to like different things.
@KundaliniRising333 if the average is 69 might as well calk it a seven I'd say that's a step up from a 5 rated game.
Must play for real fans of Dead by Daylight
@KundaliniRising333 update-yes there are a few more 5s now. I'm really perplexed with this one. A few more iv seen seem to really like it-2 say it's as good if not better than until dawn but those who dislike it seem to think it's dog *****!I'm really on the fence.
As a fan of Supermassives past titles, and NOT a fan whatsoever of Dead by Daylight, I really enjoyed it a lot after just one playthrough. I'd personally give it a 7/10.
@LiamCroft
Hey Liam, it would be great if you could answer me, thanks in advance.
