Released back in March of this year on PS5 and PS4, Unicorn Overlord has officially broken through 1 million sales — an impressive (and well deserved) benchmark for developer Vanillaware. Last we heard, the strategy RPG had shifted half a million units within a month or so, making it one of the fastest — or possibly the fastest — selling Vanillaware title to date. That's an additional 500,000 sales in the last five months, then, which bodes well.
For what it's worth, we reckon Unicorn Overlord remains one of 2024's best games. We gave it an 'excellent' 9/10 in our Unicorn Overlord PS5 review, and it'll likely be in contention for our Game of the Year awards in December.
"It's hard to say whether Unicorn Overlord is objectively Vanillaware's best game, but for us, it's right up there, competing for the crown — and that's incredibly high praise," we wrote.

I still have to play that. Vanillaware artwork is always top notch
I got a PS5 copy but haven't played it yet, fingers crossed I get round to it before Xmas but not sure, not even onto Astrobot yet, the backlog is real!!!
I was genuinely shocked at how much I liked it I love how vanillaware just moves onto different genre's of games with each title and each come out so good
It's been on my backlog since launch.
AstroBot and Ghostwire Tokyo are between me and it atm, but after those two I have nothing else until Dragon Age on Christmas Day. I plan to fill in the space between with Unicorn Overlord.
Can't wait.
The demo absolutely sold me on this game. Now I'm 45 hrs in and loving it.
Wonderful news! Looking forward to playing it one day.
Thats great for them, but I’m also a little bit annoyed that this sold so much more than 13 Sentinels. I’d love more games like that.
This is on my wishlist and I'll definitely gonna play it. I own most of their games on my PS4/PS5 and they never miss the mark. I'm happy for them!
So nice to see a developer happy with these sorts of numbers - it has clearly exceeded what they hoped for and has made them money.
There are a few big publishers/devs who could learn a thing or two here.
It was a really good enjoyable experience.
I can't wait to play it. It's definitely on the list. And agree with some other people on here that 13 sentinels is amazing and its one of my favourite games
Oh wow.
I had honestly forgotten that this game existed.
😅
It feels like it released, got some coverage, and then most people just moved on and forgot about it.
At least in the circles I move in.
Still my personal GOTY
I played 13 Sentinels last year, so when this game was announced, I ordered the collectors edition. I rarely play new releases mostly I go for classics but this one was 100+ hours on release.
I still need to finish this, but it’s absolutely fantastic. I was so put off by the gameplay videos, but listening to Micah on Summon Sign sold me to try the demo. I immediately fell in love with the game.
Great to see a company take a risk and work out. This game should have a long tail. I'm a big Vanillaware fan and I still haven't bought it yet
Well deserved! It scratched my Ogre Battle itch that I had for two decades! I hope they release a sequel eventually.
Beyond deserved! I’m about 60 hours in and still unlocking new parts to this game. I’m taking my time and dipping in and out… something quite comforting about this game knowing it’s sitting there to return to.
Definitely high up on my games of the year!
It’s a lot of fun, with great graphics and lots of different units, but I put about 50-60 hours in, had my fill, then felt no urge to carry on and complete it. But I enjoyed the time I had with it
Congrats for Vanillaware!
Well deserved 👏👏
Another example you don't need $400 million budget to make a fun and polished game that beloved by gamers.
Congratulations! I think it will have legs…I know it’s on my list but I still haven’t got the time to play it on the “no games PS5” that gave me an insane barrage of games to play all year long.
I can't vote in that poll. No *Haven't played it because I never heard off it - option in the poll...
Eh.
I want to like it.
SRPGs are one of my favorite genres. Valkyria Chronicles, Triangle Strategy, Fire Emblem, Devil Survivor, etc. count among my favorite series. But I really struggled to get into this one.
It is a well-made game, though, so I'm glad it's doing well. It'd probably do even better if Vanillaware decided to put it on PC.
@Nei Looking at that artwork, I think everyone realizes it'll have legs.
I initially really enjoyed my time with it, then I lost interest when I started digging deeper.
The system where you're able to control what your units do or who they target based on other information is really cool! It's just too similar to my day job 😂
It started to feel like extra work for me
One of the best of the year, no doubt.
@Ralizah Cheeky!
@Fishysensei Isn't that true of every game? The media cycle covers it for a week or two then moves onto the next thing.
The demo was great and I will buy this at some point. 13 Sentinels is my favourite from them though
I'm very happy Vanillaware is seeing this level of success. I still want to try the game eventually, but I'm very busy right now with not just my backlog, but also my school work as a whole
I had a fun experience on my way to a platinum with this game. Only one playthrough needed but I ended up playing 3 more playthroughs since I enjoyed it. Would highly recommend!
Played a few hours but got distracted by other releases. It's a beautiful game but didn't completely click with me in the 4 hours I played to date.
It's in my backlog now alongside 13 sentinels and I hope to play both in the near future.
Definitely one of my favorite games of 2024 along with Stellar Blade and Dragon Dogma 2. Congrats
Had it on the shelf started playing it not long ago. One of the best games this year alongside Stellar Blade for me.
Marvellous game by marvellous devs. Deserved.
