Star Wars Outlaws dropped last week to rather mild scores across the board (at least in terms of popular video games). We awarded the game 6/10, with its mediocre combat and stealth being prime detractors. Its Metacritic aggregate lies somewhere in the mid-70s (depending on the platform), which are respectable numbers, at least in our eyes. Still, Ubisoft Massive director Julian Gerighty says he's a "little disappointed" with the game's critical reception.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Gerighty feels like gamers on the ground are enjoying the game more than its Metacritic score suggests, and said: "I'm a little disappointed with the Metacritic; Of course, recognition from press and critics is very important to us, but players are really connecting with what we did."
Gerighty says that the team responsible feels a "level of pride, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment" for the work that went into the game. It took roughly four years to make, during which time they "literally reached for the stars".
It's not all doom and gloom, however, as Gerighty looks towards the future: "This will be a game that millions of people are going to play for years and years, and we're never going to stop improving it. Well, that's a lie – we'll probably stop improving it, but today, my mind is not on stopping improving it."
Are you enjoying Star Wars Outlaws? What review score do you think the game warrants? Let us know in the comments section below.

How he's dissapointed with the reception when he created one if not the d*mbest enemies AI in gaming history and it's on Hardest difficulty!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eSoHdzKBVZ8
Even Alien Isolation, a game from a decade ago has much better A.I than this slop
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bq9U3WVMTac&pp=ygUZR2FtZSB3aXRoIHRoZSBzbWFydGVzdCBBSQ%3D%3D
It's the first ever star wars open world game guys. It may not be perfect but there will likely be others and there's always room for improvement. Remember the first Assassins creed? Yeah that one got hyped to all hell and it sucked.
Cool! No one cares… Can you forget about this game, Julian, and go back to making The Division. I’ve been waiting almost 6 years for 3.
The majority of people actually playing it seems to have been giving a fantastic reception to the game.
It's great stuff I'd give it a solid 8. Beautiful environments, amazing use of everything Star Wars and tons to do in much more organic ways than other Ubi titles. The whole package definitely overcomes the shortcomings.
Just finished playing Jedi Survivor and loved it. Maybe some recency bias, but it's one of my favorite games this generation. Feel like it's pretty underated, which is probably mostly due to the performance issues at launch. But general pessimism around Star Wars may also play a role.
That could also be factoring in here to push the scores down a bit more.
Mid game, mid score. If that's difficult for him to comprehend, I can understand why the game turned out the way it did.
To many bugs and technical problems to really get higher scores 😅

@PuppetMaster Allen Isolation has better AI than most games from any era. It was a focal point of its development to get the Xenomorph's AI right, because the whole game is basically dependent on it. Metal Gear Solid's AI is significantly more emergent than any other games from the past two decades, because it was important for the stealth-action it was going for.
You can call Outlaw's AI objectively bad (though in a mostly mindless, checklist open world game with minimal stealth, I question how much that really matters), but don't just flippantly compare its AI to other games that were made explicitly with AI in mind. That's disingenuous at best and completely ignorant to the realities of game development at worse.
@Thatguyoverthere She's not ugly, and that isn't even a problem to begin with.
People like you act like the most iconic video games characters of all time aren't a portly plumber and freakishly proportioned hedgehog. Not to mention Ms. Pac-Man — unless those legs awaken something deep within you. If you want to ogle something, there's plenty of resources for that elsewhere.
I'll grab it next time I want a big open world. That might be a while. I started AC Origins, and hear it is stupid long? I don't know, I'm enjoying it. But that's in large part due to the last Ubisoft Ubergame I played was Far Cry 5.
@RoomWithaMoose While the xenomorph AI in "Alien Isolation" is undoubtedly incredible, the AI of the human and android enemies is notoriously erratic. I've personally bounced off the game multiple times because of it!
@RoomWithaMoose woman in Jedi ass Jedi outfit, using the force to move rocks- insulting Mary Sue.

I really enjoy the game, about 16 hours deep rn. I do not understand all the harshly negative reviews neither. And I don’t even care about SW that much. I would say if people like the vibe, and stealth gameplay, they should give it a shot definitely 👍🏻
It's not met their sales expectations either, even after they downgraded them following it's luke warm critical reception. I think I know what the lead title in Black Friday sales is going to be this year.
@Thatguyoverthere I'm devastated for you that she doesn't meet your hotness standards. Will you be ok?
@RoomWithaMoose "But don't just flippantly compare its AI to other games that were made explicitly with AI in mind. That's disingenuous at best and completely ignorant to the realities of game development at worse."
So i'm disingenious to show the fact that this AAAA game developed in 4 years has bad AI compare to a decade old game???
@RoomWithaMoose Did you notice that your examples of "iconic ugly people" are male followed by "not a human female"?
You can deny this as much as you like, but I'll sit here and wait patiently for you to tell me of an iconic female character in gaming who isn't hot.
They say that sex sells. What they actually mean is that female sex sells. I'm not saying that this is a good or a bad thing btw, but it is the truth. It is not men who make Twitch millions of dollars by just sitting in a bathtub.
I think it looks fine but I never buy Ubisoft games at launch because they always seem to drop price quicker than games from other publishers for some reason..
I’ll pick it up for £20 Black Friday.
@LikelySatan yo, Origins is a great AC. I loved the mechanics and the story (and ending and how it retconed the AC universe) but it did kinda killed the franchise for me with its insane length.
I played Odyssey later and stoped two thirds of the story in. They are just too repetitive. Made me never buy an AC game since.
@PuppetMaster Shocker a hardcore linear horror game whose whole thing is advanced AI for the Xeno has better AI then a big open world game made for a wider audience.
Gamers really do love using stupid comparisons.
@PuppetMaster Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. Also, did Ubi ever even call this one AAAA? Wasn't that just Skull & Bones?
@Thatguyoverthere Kay isn't ugly she looks fine.
@LifeGirl Princess Peach. Unless you're into those giant eyes...
@LifeGirl Faith. Unless you're into strong, independent women.
@LifeGirl Aloy. Unless you're a normal person that expects women to also look like normal people.
It's not as good as I'd hoped but I'm enjoying it for the most part. It'll fall by the wayside for a bit tomorrow when I can start Astrobot
@TheDudeElDuderino I finished origins and didn't think it was too long but I did miss lots of side missions. Both odyssey and Valhalla were way too long and gave up in both long long long before the end
@DennisReynolds Lol here comes another diehard Ubisoft defender.
@RoomWithaMoose You need a big mirror if you said i'm disingenious while you're here making excuses for this game. And They didn't say AAAA explicitly but clearly they said Outlaws has "the biggest ever marketing budget" for their games.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/07/star-wars-outlaws-boasts-ubisofts-biggest-ever-marketing-budget-strong-launch-expected
So it's safe to say this game is an AAAA game or maybe AAAAA since it has bigger marketing budget than S&B.
@RoomWithaMoose So in other words, you could not actually think of an example to prove me wrong. They're all hot dude - every last one.
Got the same score as Concord here. 😂
Ubisofts stock value continues to dwindle. I’ll be curious what the sells numbers are as people claimed pre-orders were pathetic. Guess the knock off hans doesn’t appeal so wide. The stars wars IP cannot attract on that name alone anymore. DEIsney and game developers have to make compelling products and storylines. Anyways the market speaks and if the majority think something is okay then that’s the perception. Besides ubisoft should be comfortable with not getting gamers money since they said they should be comfortable with not owning their games.
@LifeGirl If they are hot then all females by definition are hot 😅
Peach is completely covered by clothes only showing a bit of the arms and face. I do find Faith pretty but she's no model, she just looks like a regular Asian girl. Aloy had hate campaigns against her because gamers found her so unattractive, in the last game they complained she even had facil hair.
It’s perfectly ok to have a 7/10, more than enough time to play a wide range of games and honestly I’ve enjoyed some mediocre games more than critical darlings over the years because we all have our own personal taste.
@Truegamer79 The original AC had its faults, but it far from sucked. It is still one of my favourite AC games.
He says he's a little disappointed, but not in a way that shows contrition or regret for the game not BEING as good as it could be. He's dissapointed that the criticism exists.
'I'm a little disappointed with the Metacritic; Of course, recognition from press and critics is very important to us, but players are really connecting with what we did'
It's like saying, 'I'm sorry you feel that way'. It's insincere and does not reflect introspection about the game but externalises the problem as being with the critics.
He further reinforces his position by appealing to emotion, that the developers' feelings towards their job in some way serves to demonstrate that in of itself how they feel is proof enough that the product must be good.
'....a level of pride, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment" for the work that went into the game. It took roughly four years to make, during which time they "literally reached for the stars'
Literally reached for the stars. Idiot. Of course they didn't literally do that. What, they reached up with their hands to the sky throughout development?!
@PuppetMaster I don’t get your point, the AI looks perfect to me. What sort of Star Wars game would have stormtroopers able to hit their target?!
In all seriousness I’m really enjoying the game, they overhyped it and many things could be improved (and it’s not really ‘open world’). But the game is really enjoyable, lots to do, a great world to run around in. People forget 7/10 games are perfect for a low-pressure romp.
6/10 I think was a bit harsh, but the review raised fair points and you won’t always agree with a review.
The game doesnt perform well, and visual quality looks bad too - another game where performance and visual quality were sacrificed to the god of ray tracing?
I've played around six hours so far, personally I'm enjoying it quite a bit, definitely improves when it opens out with the exploration and quests after the first couple of hours. Not perfect but solid 8/10 for me.
I’m not into Star Wars (or Ubisoft games besides Far Cry) but why is a 7/10 considered disappointing? It means the game is good, with some flaws. This obsession with 8+ games only being worth playing is ridiculous.
This game got the Days Gone treatment. A very solid and enjoyable game given negative reviews because it did nothing new for its genre.
He may mention metacritic and say players like it but it doesnt look like that from the PS Store star rating to me - 3.96, which feels comparatively quite low, with nearly 1/5 (19%) of players giving it 1 or 2 stars.
@Rich33 Dunno what you've been playing, but it runs well for me.
@PuppetMaster Can't argue your point i see.
@gollumb82 Game scores are just weird, think they should go by grading instead, it's crazy to see people think 8/10 games as "mid"
@Frmknst Sometimes these are the games that I enjoy the most. Some jank here and there, questionable gameplay and technical stuff, but a great and immersive world to be in and memorable characters that stay with you.
That's at least the impression I get from having watched/read several reviews. I particularly enjoyed Skill Up's review, and how he said it all came together in a fantastic final act.
@Bentleyma
I havent - the various performance reviews were enough to see that this game needs work before i would be prepared to buy it. The 60fps mode image quality did not look good (and im accounting for the fact that even 4k videos look worse than when you actually have it on screen), and the framerate drops are well, well, beyond what i can usually see and tolerate.
They should remove ray tracing like Jedi Survivor, which should enable them to lock to 60fps, with a res boost.
Of course consumers actuall Give it higher than what it’s worth in how ‘good’ it is (or all games)
Need to justify that the 70-120£ spent was worth it. That’s why in polls you get people giving 10s when a game clearly isn’t, or they happily overlook bugs etc
@Ainu20 completely agree 7 out of 10s can be personal GOTY list material if it vibes with you and you can forgive its flaws.
Personally on this game there are enough reviewers whose opinion usually aligns with mine, more often than not, that scored it 6 or less, with good reasoning. Hence I’m less enthused, but might get to it one day, especially if they keep updating it well.
@TheDudeElDuderino Shadows is the "break glass in case of emergency" setting. If I play through all of Origins and it burns me out, I'll just wait a year or so. Sometimes open worlds are good for a vacation, if you know what I mean. But after I play them I need a break from open world games, lol.
I've sunk about 20 hours in, and I'd give it a 8. It's just lacking a bit of polish.
@themightyant There are definitely enough caveats mentioned in most reviews to wait for a good sale, but I'm at least cautiously optimistic about how much I'd enjoy it. Sometimes that's all I need.
@AverageGamer that was another mediocre game
@Truegamer79
This is such an NPC thing to say. This is the reason we have mediocre games all the time, because you guys keep defending this crap.
The first AC had incredible world building, polished gameplay, incredible city, good story, very immersive allround. That was 2 generations ago.
This pile of dogpoop has absolutely nothing redeemable about it. AI on PS2 games is better, I've played more immersive PS2 games, physics are better in PS2 games, writing is better in PS2 games, I can go on.
Wtf is wrong with people
@PsBoxSwitchOwner good point. Buyer's Remorse is a powerful reaction.
Why they didn't just do a Star Wars themed Division is beyond me; such a waste of talent and tech.
@DennisReynolds Argue what exactly when you don't have anything that prove me wrong?
What you did only cry and made excuses when the truth is your precious game has bad AI compare to a decade old game.
Heck. This game somehow has bad facial animation and water physics compare to Ubisoft old games like AC Black Flag and Syndicate!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KKBgyv4clug&t=21s
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2yqYJndc9D0
Come at me again when you grow up and not wearing Ubisoft fanboy glasses.
I get it, it's a Ubisoft game with bugs at launch so the scores are understandable. However why am I seeing this culture war discourse online once again, about her character looking bad or manly? What the hell is happening, the main character looks perfectly fine.
@McTwist
Your nostalgia goggles are showing. The original AC is one of the most bland repetitive boring pieces of crap ever made in the open world genre. It sucked then and it sucks now. It only gets a pass because it created the series in the first place. Then they made AC 2 as an apology for making such a turd sandwich initially.
@Drago201 really...I've played 60 hours and I've not had one bug or technical problem?I do have a vrr tv so frame rate problems aren't really noticeable but everything else has been great technically
@Thatguyoverthere In what world is that a ugly woman? You are probably the same that would say that about Tifa in FF7R. The game is not that special and buggy and launch I think developers should put more effort in releasing better optimization for their games you can only make one first impression.
@waynesworld I have no idea what's going on anymore. She looks absolutely fine, not that it even matters. The old "2/10 Would not bang" memes sadly still seem as relevant today as they ever did. Will we ever progress past this?
@Truegamer79
Then go and watch some comparisons. I'm not even a big AC fan. Ubisoft games have tons of comparison compilations of old vs new. They were very immersive. Mission design I could agree, but the rest DEFINITELY not.
You can't create such a huge franchise on garbage. I'd play AC1 over this crap any day of the week
@LifeGirl They make millions by complaining about women conning boys by giving them unreal espectations and asking money for a coarse to be like them.
I have to say people are really getting sad by calling this woman ugly she looks great. Not every character needs to be a model. I guess we are stuck with the Tate generation. Probably the people who complain the most are the people who looks avarage if they are lucky.
@McTwist I sold the first game really fast was quite dissapointed in the game and the game overall.
The guy was just saying he is a bit disappointed with the reception. He wasn't attacking people who dislike the game or anything. He is just saying he wishes it was received better is all yet people are getting really worked up about his comments. Take it down a notch or two.
What is it about Ubisoft in particular that just seems to draw such strong feelings from people? It's honestly a bit baffling to me. If you don't like their style then that's fine but it seems like some people just REALLY have it out for them and try to call them out on the smallest weirdest things.
Is she pretty enough? (She looks fine. Just a couple of odd facial animations here and there is all.) Why is the AI stupid? (As if Ubisoft is the only studio that has the occasional stupid AI in the industry.) Why is the protagonist black in a Japan setting? (Even though it stars a Japanese woman as well and the black character is a historical figure they are just taking some creative liberties with.)
I'm not saying it's not okay to criticize them. Ubisoft has certainly made some mistakes but it just seems like some folks absolutely despise everything about them and I honestly just don't get it. Okay I'm done ranting.
@PuppetMaster That you're going around implying Ubi considers this AAAA — or even AAAAA! — when they've never said anything of the sort, that's being disingenuous my dude.
If you'll reread my first response, I didn't say you couldn't criticize the game's AI. I just scrutinized your comparison. If your criticisms were removed from that comparison, I would still be calling into question how much poor AI negatively affects a player's experience with this specific game. Notice I'm not disputing that the AI is bad, rather I'm initiating a more nuanced discussion as to whether or not that matters.
What you're not understanding is this — and your other comment on water and facial animations — are arguably very superficial critiques. The equivalent to calling out plot holes in any movie. You can do so, sure. And you're not wrong. But does that alone ruin the entire experience? Many would say no.
Wonder how many of the people absolutely hating on the game have actually played it.
It’s actually pretty decent, but yes has flaws and areas to improve, but the hate is mental.
It’s a shame as feels like if there was a sequel they know what to improve on, but the haters prob reducing the chance of a sequel.
@JB_Whiting you've just described one of my dream games. I would spend spend spend on that one.
@Korgon Exactly. They just launched a project that they'd been working on for about 4 years under his direction, it's completely understandable if he's a little disappointed with the reception. I would be too, we're all human and it certainly takes a better person than me to remain unaffected by criticism of my work, no matter how valid it is. It's equally understandable that he's looking for positives in this situation.
That doesn't mean he thinks his work is perfect or he's unable to recognise what they should improve upon. Some people seem to think that he needs to fall down on his knees and beg for forgiveness for the hot pile of steaming garbage he made or something.
@PuppetMaster So are you child or manchild? Which is it?
I never said AI is great i said its dumb comparing it to a game that relies completely on advanced AI for its monster as the gameplay hook. Outlaws doesn't need good AI because its an open world game where the main focus is the open world, the AI does its job and that's all the game needs. You're comparing an apple to an orange and its rather dumb.
Well I don't think the game is bad but from what I saw I think it needed more time.
Been watching a playthrough of the game and from what I've seen about 15 hours into it I think the reviewers weren't harsh enough.
You can slap a Star Wars skin on some of the most basic, half-baked mechanics done better by all its contemporaries, accompanied by a disjointed hollow shell of a story, and Star Wars fans will gobble it right up. Y'all need higher standards.
But then, what else should I expect from Ubisoft.
@LifeGirl They can all certainly be thought of as attractive; I alluded to as much with my "unless..." comments. But none of them were designed to be sexy. You can find them sexy, but that's your prerogative. An average hetero man would find an average woman sexy. But I think there's definitely a difference between that and 'sex sells.'
It's somewhat hard to satisfy your request, because you didn't really specify what you meant by "iconic" and "hot" — especially with your 'human' requirement. I think my three examples are perfect, because they're all iconic and none were designed to be sexy. Buuut... Gruntilda? Does that work for you? Zarya? Or is she still hot? I wouldn't call her ugly, but she's definitely not my type. Roll? Is there a new rule that it has to be an adult woman? Alma? No ghosts allowed? Shodan? No AIs either — or does she just have a sexy face?
Personally I think it's a great game. Definitely better than 6/10 in my eyes. Closer to an 8 if anything.
I don't see why he's surprised. It's one of the most 7/10 games Ive ever played.
it sounds like Ubisoft are going to update the game to iron out the bugs. If the combat issues are fixed in the next few updates this game could get better critic reviews in a month or two, though im not sure how many will re-review a game 2 months later.
@DennisReynolds I said come at me again when you grow up and not wearing Ubisoft fanboys glasses.
Also, "it doesn't need good AI because it's open world game" is the d*mbest excuse i ever see, especially when a 9 year old open world game like MGS 5 has pretty solid AI enemies and better than Outlaws AI.
Just stop. Don't die on this hill kid. Ubisoft doesn't give a finger about fanboys like you defending their broken-mediocre games.
It’s an average game with an average score
@kirkn should have released in a finish state then
@waynesworld compare her to her face model
@Scoot23 two things will decide if this game has a sequel: sales and/or the will of the publisher.
'Hate' will have nothing to do with it.
I actually love the game. 9/10 for me.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah, fine. But they did deliberately make this character uglier than she needs to be and the proof of that is that the woman they based her does NOT look like this.
Hmm I wonder why Ubisoft stock has tanked with bangers like Outlaws. /s
Mr Gerighty isn't the only one disappointed apparently.
I did try Outlaws via Ubisoft+ and put in 15 hours and it was just a bit dull in terms of story & progression. I have other games I can play that offer me more fun without slogging through a bunch of dull nonsense first.
The world's looked nice though and that's something Ubisoft usually get right in most of their games
@Truegamer79 Assassin’s Creed was a new IP at the moment. So, of course it had many issues and inconsistencies. Outlaws is using a well established IP and Ubisoft is supposed to have mastered open world games by now. Outlaws being at this state is unacceptable for such a hyped game.
@LifeGirl She doesn't need to look like her, she needs to look like someone who fits in the Star Wars universe. And she does, she looks perfect for the role. This madness needs to end.
@PuppetMaster You know what come back to me when you start acting like a mature adult instead of spoilt brat and i will continue the "discussion".
Obviously not totally relevant to this article but can Push do or investigate what is exactly happening with UK retailer GAME?
Since changing hands the (lack of) customer service and pre-orders disappearing antics are verging on criminal. Has anyone for example who pre-ordered Outlaws several months ago received theirs or been given an explanation why pre-orders aren't being shown in their order history?
@LifeGirl Fiona from Shrek is pretty ugly
@LifeGirl We don't know who they based Kay off as Ubi never revealed who her face model is. The voice actress who also mo-caps her isn't the face model. Anyway Kay looks completely fine, she's actually pretty cute in a girl next door kinda way.
I see this game as a slow burner, with sales increasing up to holiday season.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@Trapdoor afaik it’s an issue where they have updated the website to be like other Fraser group sites and some things haven’t gone smooth.
@Loamy This is exactly what I think too. There are flaws in the game for sure, but I am having such a fun time. Every cantina just oozes Star Wars. It is too easy, and repetitive, and this and that…..but I just can’t stop playing.
@Trapdoor GAME stopped taking pre orders on July
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2024/07/retailer-game-is-reportedly-ending-in-store-pre-orders
@rusty82 yes, dude, my problem is that I play all the side content. This is exactly it. Took me forever hahaha
@LikelySatan I know exactly what you mean dude. It took me 2 years before I was ready to touch Odyssey after Origins.
Odyssey is one hell of a looker though, and again, I like everything about it, but I tend to do a lot of side content instead of focusing on the story and so, well, yeah, it's my homework
Hello there fellow gamers;
I have to agree with @Vivisapprentice @ApostateMage @Hyena_socks @Loamy and @Westernwolf4 , I am also really enjoying the game.
It is a Star Wars game that feels like Star Wars, it has the vibe, the ambiance, the style and many references to the source material, has it should any adaptation have.
I do think the highlights for me are the actual Space exploration and Space combat as well as the different factions that may get in favour with some and not so good with others.
Does it have it´s flaws? Oh yes, it does have indeed.
Gunplay could be a litle better as well as the games stealth.
But overall, it´s a pretty good game and more importantly, I´m having a lot of fun with it. Isn´t that what matters the most?
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
For what it's worth, I'm really enjoying it. I kept my expectations in check since it's Ubisoft and was actually pleasantly surprised. It's not the most groundbreaking game, but what it does it does good in my honest opinion.
@DennisReynolds I don't know why kids like you don't understand that good AI enemies either for open world, survival horror, FPS, hack & slash, RPG, or even racing game will make gameplay more fun and challenging.
So there's no such thing that an open world game especially a big budget one like Outlaws don't need good AI enemies. I guess you love facing enemies who just doesn't fight back at all?
I gave you proof that MGS 5, a 9 year old open world game, has solid AI enemies and also much better than Outlaws AI. But you ignored it.
Or here, read this article that explained how impressive AI enemies in Far Cry 3 and 4. Both are open world games by Ubisoft and i'm sure they got better reviews than Outlaws.
https://www.gamedeveloper.com/programming/the-definition-of-artificial-insanity-the-systemic-ai-of-far-cry
Heck. Sony developed an AI called GT Sophy that can beat GT Sport top players without cheating. I believe they also used the AI for GT 7 and i'm sure any sane GT fans are thankful that Sony put a lot of effort to created good AI for a racing game.
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2438564-ai-beats-top-racers-at-gran-turismo-without-cheating/#:~:text=An artificial intelligence can beat, previous version of the game.
That's why i compare AI in Outlaws with Alien Isolation. Why a 2024 game with bigger budget has the d*mbest AI in gaming history while a decade old game has better AI? That's just unacceptable and players including anyone who bought Outlaws should demand a refund from Ubisoft or at least asked them to fix the AI.
Imagine bad AI enemies in Ninja Gaiden or DMC who doesn't dodge, block, or counter and just stand there when players attack them. It will ruin the game and Ninja Gaiden or DMC wouldn't end up as a popular action game with challenging enemies.
Imagine bad AI enemies in FPS / TPS who doesn't take cover when players shoot them or doesn't know how to flank players.
When comes to gameplay, players should demand developers to give their best because gameplay is king. And we're talking about AAA games here with hundreds of people developing a game and 4 years development cycle. There's no excuse Ubisoft can't make good AI enemies for Outlaws when they their old games like Far Cry has it.
Now go away and take your big L. Feel free to put me in your blocklist too since you can't handle me spitting facts.
Can't wait for the Assassin's Creed Shadows flop as well
@PuppetMaster Have you actually played Outlaws? You seem so obsessed over an aspect that actually isn't that bad. Honestly if the AI was "better" it would break the game as the stealth system is so basic and barebones smarter enemies would make it way too tough. Combat wise you die pretty quick and enemies have perfect accuracy so yeah no one playing wants them smarter.
The issue with comparing to Far Cry and MGS is they give you a ton of options to mess with enemies, the AI has to be better because you the player have so many options to deal with them. Outlaws AI is about on par with Uncharted the only difference is Uncharted has way better gunplay making firefights far better.
@RoomWithaMoose Again. Ubisoft themself who claim Outlaws has the biggest ever marketing budget compare to their other games. So it's safe to say Outlaws is an AAAA or AAAAA game. It's not my problem if you don't want to called it AAAA / AAAAA game. My point still stand; Outlaws is a very big budget game but has crap AI. Period.
Also, what's your excuse now that Far Cry 3 and 4 has solid AI enemies? Both are open world and developed by Ubisoft too.
https://www.gamedeveloper.com/programming/the-definition-of-artificial-insanity-the-systemic-ai-of-far-cry
MGS 5 also open world game and it has solid AI enemies.
Even racing games like GT Sport and GT 7 has solid AI system called GT Sophy that can beat GT top players without cheating.
So there's no such thing as open world game doesn't need good AI enemies. Good AI should be implement for any genre and the one who gets the biggest benefits from that are the players. Period.
If you don't mind recent big budget games has poor quality compare to old games then that's your problem, not mine.
We're done here.
It's one of the most cowardly designed games in recent memory that's doesn't take an ounce of risk. You bet on average (and watered down) mechanics and don't want average scores. Mkay.
Make better games then
Gamers: We want a GOTY contenders for every game that is released and we will not accept any flaws from any game that comes out.
Developers: OK we can do that but the development cycle is going to be much longer....
Publishers: ...and the games are probably going to cost more to make and will be more for the consumer to purchase.
Gamers: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!...we want new PERFECT games from every studio every 18 months or less for 50 buck each. No micro transactions, no season passes, and defiantly no paid for DLC. Also, it needs to work right out of the box, NO DAY ONE UPDATES!!!!! OH YA and no crunch either...
Developers and Publishers: Come on guys, game development is hard and there are a lot of moving parts in these games. Compromises sometimes are made in order to make other parts of the game better.
Gamers: F**K Y*U you get a 1 on Metacritic and 1000 stink pieces on Youtube trashing your game to oblivion to the point that even the casuals won't buy it.
Got it.
@Boucho11 May be mediocre… But still better than Outlaw, and would have probably scored higher and sold better.
@DennisReynolds “ Honestly if the AI was "better" it would break the game as the stealth system is so basic and barebones smarter enemies would make it way too tough. Combat wise you die pretty quick and enemies have perfect accuracy so yeah no one playing wants them smarter.”
That’s a design issue, and Ubisoft has all the blame for it. If a “better” AI would wreck the gameplay, then said gameplay was wrecked from the beginning. I’ve seen this charade between you and Puppet, and I’m inclined to see that you’re defending the game too much. If you found Outlaws enjoyable, sure, but the many flaws this game has are glaring for a dev that has extensive open world games experience.
@Savage_Joe The AI is around Uncharted's level. The difference between me and Puppet is i'm playing the game thus i know way more about the game then them. If Uncharted had AI as smart as the Xeno in Isolation then guess what it would break the game. The stealth and combat in Outlaws are a means to an end, they're to break up the setpieces and open world exploration and not something you spend ages playing around with.
@AverageGamer debatable.
@RaZieLDaNtE great to hear you're enjoying it 😁 overall I agree with your points here. I always love a bit of enthusiasm and positivity from fellow gamers. We're spoilt for choice these days with tons of quality games so I see little to complain about, even if this isn't your cup of tea.
@DennisReynolds Kay is hot. I'd like to see the faces of these people calling her "ugly" 😂 I bet they look like the bottom of a shoe.

@PuppetMaster If you're AAAA/AAAAA claim is based around marketing expenses, what's that even got to do with enemy AI? Unless you're saying they spent their budget on the wrong things, which is an entirely different conversation.
Far Cry 3 having better enemy AI doesn't mean Outlaws is required to have equatable/better AI. Again, games like MGS and Thief have AI that run circles around Far Cry's — and they're from the 90s. And that little video from your original post doesn't show much that videogamedunky hasn't shown better for countless AAA games from the last decade.
But even with all that, you still don't seem to understand that I'm willing to agree the AI sucks and haven't fully asserted that it's 'good enough.' My whole issue was your comparisons. It's clear that you are beyond disingenuous, and are instead very ignorant to the realities of game development...
It's mostly brainrot from people that watch asmongold and geeks + gamers, they get fed angry slop and take it out on everything like it's an actual hobby.
I enjoy me some 7/10 games. I don’t need every game to 10/10 masterpiece to be enjoyable. 7/10s are the games you could just turn off your brain and fool around
@Loamy I don't get why people are having this discussion in the first place. Personally I think she looks kinda ugly but that doesn't affect the game at all so doesn't really matter. I like the game so far and I especially like Kay as a character. Whether she's hot or ugly is such a dumb thing to fixate on. It's like the people focusing on Eve from Stellar Blade being hot when the actual game is fantastic and worth talking about.
@James_42 well yeah 😂 can't say I was thinking of the attractiveness before I came on here and saw the high-brow online discourse...
I love Kay, she's cool and a badass at the same time. Who cares if she looks like Luther from The Warriors.
I'd say the response is atypical for a Ubisoft game.
More westernized garbage.
@RoomWithaMoose I loved Alien Isolation (STILL disappointed they never added the VR), but I don't think the AI is as amazing as you describe. The NPC is hilarious to kill because it's so stupid and I always easily evaded the Alien (In hard mode first time) by hiding under a trolly or something equally flimsy. The alien has a tendency to haunt the same area for a while, or double back on itself to try and catch you off guard, but I realised that straight away. You can also lead all the androids around like lambs to slaughter at the bridge area. It's a good game, with good AI, but not a high bar.
@Frmknst Ubisoft can never really nail the finish. They get the ambience, worldbuilding and general 'feel' spot-on, but the actual gameplay, characters and story never hit the mark.
It's always disappointing to have a fantastic world to exist in, and then you get pulled out of it due to everything in it being mediocre.
@Supern0va yes the worlds in their games are always a pleasure to explore.
I will be slaughtered for saying this, but their environmental story telling is on a par with games like TLoU.
They don’t always miss the mark in characters and story. The Far Cry games are renowned for their antagonists and the story and characters in FC5 are particularly memorable for me.
I also think AC Odyssey and Valhalla has some absolutely amazing quests and characters.
Comparing them to Witcher 3, they didn’t have anything to rival the Baron storyline, but they did maintain a great depth of side quest and character quality despite the vast amount of material.
Quality didn’t suffer to quantity as much as you might have expected.
The original Division has to be singled out for its world too, as that is amazing to explore even to this day. In terms of depicting a fictional scenario/world, that is on a par with TLoU.
@Loamy Hello there friend.
Yeah, Gaming has always been both a hobby and a passion of mine, so I clearly have enthusiasm and positivity about the Gaming Universe. Also agree with your point, we are indeed spoilt for choice these days in terms of great games out there, and yet, some people find something to complaint about instead of enjoying the things they actualy do enjoy. Go figure.
Oh well, Cheers and have a good one
