Developer Mojang has announced its plans to drop support for PSVR in its ever-popular sandbox game, Minecraft. As outlined in a recent update on its website, you won't be able to play the game using PS4's virtual reality headset as of March 2025.
Minecraft has been playable in PSVR on PS4 since September 2020, when it was added in a free update to the game. It allows you to play the whole game in virtual reality, taking in the true scale of the buildings you make and the underground holes you fall into. While it's great to have the option, we imagine the player count using PSVR with Minecraft is low enough that Mojang is pulling the plug.
"After you receive the final update [in March 2025], you will still receive updates on your PlayStation® and be able to play without PlayStation®VR," the team says. "From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Tokens) will continue to be available. You will no longer be able to use your PlayStation®VR with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates."
Mojang is currently working on a native PS5 version of Minecraft, though it's not known whether this will include support for PSVR2.
Do you still play Minecraft with PSVR? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.

Wow. Imagine having bought a psvr to include psvr and they pull the plug. You really never own anything.
A real shame for me, loved seeing certain world like the jurassic world pack in VR. Never thought PSVR support was something that would need to be taken away. However seeing as my VR1 is packed away and my VR2 is out, I guess I'm part of the reason they can drop support lol.
Hopefully VR2 compatibility is in the works, but seeing as it too could be removed what's the point.
Rather it’s this or the crew 🙄
Thy can give it and thy can take it away 👀
For what is digital you never truly own😤
Regulations are really needed 🤑👀
While I can understand not wanting to support it in future updates, taking something away that already works is absurd. It's a very specific use case, but someone might've actually bought it for the VR mode. This shouldn't be legal.
I dont own a PSVR or 2, so dont have a horse in the race so to say, but this is a really sh#tty thing to do - and quite concerning too.
Removing functionality out of a game that people have spent money on is not good, and even low use numbers cannot justify it.
They probably have figures showing few people are playing. Be a financial decision
This is needed since too much development efforts and computing power is used for Minecraft VR to work
This has no bearing on me whatsoever, but I'm curious if there can be any legal ramifications for this?
I'm sure there is a terms and services agreement you need to agree to when you first log in, but I wonder how specific it was in regards to a situation like this.
Someone could argue that they paid for a service that is being removed from them unfairly.
Is it possible to disable game updates before they take it out? Or will that stop you being able to play it all? Not sure how Minecraft works regarding that nowadays.
This should be illegal. i actually played Minecraft VR recently and don’t want it removed. It needs a legacy mode. You can’t just remove it. I get it, new Minecraft doesn’t work. Okay, let me play old Minecraft.
I don´t get these decisions. Aren´t they afraid that this will lead to less people buying minecraft VR on PS4?
@Balosi AFAIK the game should be fine if you don't update it, you just won't be able to do anything online at all.
Why can't they leave an offline mode? Is it online only?
The ps4 box has a great big psvr compatible banner on it.
This is bad for me. My kids love making worlds on their iPads and then sending me in on psvr… normally to be tortured in some way.
I think it’s really dreadful that they’re doing this. But I’ve totally come to expect it. Everything is just absolute trash.
I love playing this in VR.
Okay now they are just trolling PSVR2 owners on purpose. We are all being Punk'd. Where's the hidden camera?
@torne Not really. It’s a license and likely barely anyone is using it. One of the main premises of a license of any kind is that it isn’t perpetual. A movie ticket is a license to be in the theater. An invitation to a friends house is a license to be their. A software license follows the same premise, you can use it while it’s available unless you break a term of use.
My son loves playing this in VR. So I guess that’s stopping because… ???
How hard can it be to leave in a mode where you can use VR but it just doesn’t have new features they add.
@Czar_Khastik I thought it was because the owner Microsoft, is a small indie company that needs what little money it receives from Minecraft for other projects.
Is Minecraft on PSVR2 or is it just PSVR?
I can't handle Minecraft myself, but my kids love it and to maximize their useage; Older plays on the PSVR1 and Younger plays on the TV with an XBOX, it did cost me a TV when he was playing PSVR1 Creed and he punched the hell outta it haha!
This is ridiculous to drop support.
@IamJT I totally get that, but there is also a level of marketing that has been done for this game advertising vr. Most notably the boxart saying it is compatible with psvr.
Not disputing what you are saying, I get how licenses work. Just sort of pointing out how someone less in the know might feel.
There is also the fact that this is just impacting playstation at this point. Other vr headsets are not impacted. Seems a bit intentional from the outside looking in. But again I have no dog in this race, just saying what I see.
@UntilRespawn well done guys n gals you all managed to get to comment 19 before someone explicitly used the M word.
Keep at it baby steps
(yes I know the comment I am replying to was sarcasm much like my reply to it.)
Alternative thoughts: Sony are winding down support for the hardware and Minecraft continues to evolve. This could potentially lead to issue going forward that removal will head off.
I would expect similar situations arising as we move forward with game that have vr support as a side option. Games that the majority of players don't use VR to play.
Never played Minecraft before, but have been wanting to, so 2 days ago I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the PS4 VR Edition to play on my PSVR. It isn't even here yet and now I find out it will be obsolete in 6 months ... grrr!
PSVR Minecraft made me want to throw up after about 30 seconds. I loved the idea of it, but it just didn’t work for me. Still, it’s sad to see a VR game option go away.
I didn't play it, I don't play it, and I don't intend to play it.
But still : this is outrageous.
I mean : really. They should not have the right to do something like that.
You want to stop adding new content to the VR mode, fine. But you don't take it away by an update ! You just can't do that !
This is Destiny vaulting all over again.
