What are the best The Simpsons games? When The Simpsons first aired in late 1989, few could have anticipated its cultural impact. While its appeal may have waned slightly over the past 30 years, it remains the longest running American animated series, racking up over 700 episodes and counting. Created by Matt Groening and depicting the exploits of an average, everyday family, its cast of characters – including the titular Simpsons – have become household names.
Unsurprisingly, with such long-running success, there have been a number of video game tie-ins, with many coming on the NES and SNES during the franchise’s early 90s explosion. The number of releases has cooled off in subsequent years, as overall interest in The Simpsons has naturally plateaued, but there are still several PlayStation titles inspired by the show that have become cult classics.
Perhaps most interesting of all is how versatile The Simpsons franchise has proven. Over the course of the past three decades, it’s played host to driving games, wrestling games, open world games, and even skateboarding games. That underlying flexibility has resulted in some sharp ups-and-downs for Springfield’s most famous family, but the likes of The Simpsons: Hit & Run are still very much coveted today, 20 years after first releasing.
On this page, we’ve included a list of the best The Simpsons games, spanning the series’ first adaptations for PS1 all the way through to more modern PS3 titles. 8. The Simpsons Wrestling (PS1)
Similarly to The Simpsons Skateboarding, which launched on the PS2 a year or so later, The Simpsons Wrestling was a TV show tie-in chasing trends. At the time, WWF titles were huge on PlayStation, and so throwing the likes of Barney Gumble and Groundskeeper Willie into a wrestling ring no doubt made sense to the group of money-motivated executives who signed off on the project. Unfortunately, developer Big Ape Productions delivered a sloppy experience, with laggy controls and a complete and utter lack of gameplay balance. The visuals were somewhat impressive for the PS1, but this was a critical disaster that was panned by practically every publication upon its release in 2001.
7. The Simpsons Skateboarding (PS2)
When The Simpsons Skateboarding released in 2002, franchises like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and SSX were at the peak of their powers. In fact, extreme sports were the in-thing in the early noughties, and given The Simpsons often depicted Bart on a skateboard, the crossover made sense. Unfortunately, the game was terrible, with sloppy controls and poor quality presentation. It was massively overshadowed by The Simpsons: Road Rage, which launched a year prior and was a vastly superior – if legally contentious – title.
6. The Simpsons Game (PSP)
While the Nintendo DS version of The Simpsons Game was a completely different experience, the horsepower of Sony’s handheld allowed Electronic Arts to port the PS2 version to the PSP. That meant this portable port offered the same 3D adventure as its console counterparts, complete with cut-scenes identical to the television show. Obviously there were graphical compromises made, and the PS3 version still ruled supreme, but this edition could be played entirely on the go, making it impressive in its own right.
5. The Simpsons Game (PS2)
The PS2 was such a successful console that publishers were still porting games to it as late as 2007. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, The Simpsons Game plays great on it. While publisher Electronic Arts did have to make graphical compromises compared to the PS3 release, the core adventure remained intact, allowing you to take control of a number of different characters from the TV show across a wide variety of levels, each offering a unique insight into the eclectic and often irreverent world of Springfield.
4. The Simpsons Game (PS3)
After the success of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, it felt like Springfield was about to become an iconic video game backdrop, on par with the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule. As it turns out, there was a four year break between Radical Entertainment’s open world effort and Redwood Shores’ co-op adventure. The gameplay loop in The Simpsons Game can be best compared to modern LEGO titles, where you play as a multitude of characters each with special abilities in order to solve a multitude of gameplay puzzles. It was short and a little unpolished, but still a faithful rendition of the hugely popular TV programme.
3. The Simpsons Arcade Game (PS3)
One of the earliest adaptations of The Simpsons, and arguably still one of the best: Konami’s four-player brawler featuring Springfield’s most famous faces was such a slamdunk that it was eventually ported to the PS3 as The Simpsons Arcade Game over 21 years after its original release. And it’s still a corker, with its pixel-perfect recreation of Matt Groening’s universe and high-octane combat systems. With the entire Simpsons family being playable, sans Maggie, there’s a huge variety in gameplay, as each character has their own themed weapon – including a vacuum cleaner, which matriarch Marge amusingly wields.
2. The Simpsons: Road Rage (PS2)
The Simpsons: Road Rage was so staggeringly similar to Crazy Taxi that it actually invited a lawsuit from juggernaut publisher SEGA, who felt that the TV show tie-in infringed on its original idea. This legal battle was eventually settled privately for an undisclosed fee, perhaps insinuating that Electronic Arts didn’t have a leg to stand on. With all this in mind, it won’t surprise you to learn that Road Rage was a driving game, in which you ferried the famous inhabitants of Springfield around to various iconic destinations. Despite the obvious plagiarism, the gameplay loop was fun, although the entire concept was bettered by The Simpsons: Hit & Run.
1. The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2)
Generally regarded as the greatest adaptation of The Simpsons in video game form, there are still large pockets of the gaming community that demand a remake of this PS2 era Grand Theft Auto parody. Retaining the driving gameplay from The Simpsons: Road Rage, The Simpsons: Hit & Run transformed Springfield into a sandbox, allowing you to explore freely and pick-up missions from iconic characters from the television show. While a sequel was never made, it was a critical and commercial hit, and it’s remembered fondly for its irreverent humour and sharp visual style.

hit and run was great , but the arcade game was and will always be a classic
I really wish we would get a Simpsons Hit and Run remaster for all platforms, as a newer watcher of the series I would love to be able to freely explore Springfield in a game, and I say that as someone who never played it way back when.
I know we'll never get a remaster of hit & run I just wish they'd add the PS2 version it's really crap that we've got so few PS2 games available on the PS4 / PS5
@PenguinL You’d think with how popular The Simpsons franchise still is to this day that the multiple corporations wouldn’t have any issue greenlighting a remaster for Hit & Run, especially given the popularity of the game itself among many video game fans, some of whom never even watched the show.
Hit & Run is just so good. Yes, it’s dated now but I could still have plenty fun driving around Springfield.
@PenguinL Doing a bit of googling I found out that back in 08 they ended up becoming a company under Activision Blizzard, so it seems at some point Activision ended up with the company and the rights to the game. Seems like it’s a lot to do with the multiple corporations not agreeing to it at the same time. I’ve seen articles saying the developers would love to redo it for modern consoles, and one of the show runners would as well, but I guess Disney just doesn’t want to cash in on it maybe? Wouldn’t be surprising honestly considering the only big franchise they seem to be doling out game licenses for is Star Wars. Maybe someday we’ll get that rerelease of the game though, even if it’s just the PS2 version with trophies I’d be happy.
I can play the arcade game all day. I was glad I was able to get that game when it was released on PS3/360.
Top two was locked no matter what. Shame both are not available for new people to experience.
Only have an opinion on the top 3 but I’d rank it
3.) hit n run
2.) arcade
1.) the game ps3 (the one released around the movie)
Personally.
Dotemu, Konami, Capcom, some developer - should make a new The Simpsons beat em up OR an RPG similar to the South Park games.
Special mention: LEGO Dimensions Simpsons level pack.
@Dpishere
Why a remaster? Why not a new game? Imagine whet they could do with the improved tech
For me, the main thing that's aged poorly with Hit & Run is the title now that I've lived long enough to know someone killed in a hit & run!
The thing with Simspons games for me, is that growing up I watched them in my language (Latin American dub) but the games were only English or Spain Spanish (that most people outside of Spain -included me- don't like) so half the charm of the games was completely lost since as a kid I didn't know much English.
Now the arcade game... That was fun that surpassed any language barrier.
@strawhatcrew
Man, a Stick of Truth-style Simpsons game would be awesome.
Hit & Run was the first game I ever played on my brand new, shiny (literally) silver PS2. I had a whale of a time with it - driving around sandbox Springfield was just so much fun, and I seem to remember the story was much better than I expected. Great soundtrack as well.
The arcade game was huge in our local arcade. 4 player games were great fun
The Simpsons arcade game will always be number 1 to me. A classic game.word up son
Hit and Run was great. It was one of the first console games I ever played, so I have a lot of fond memories of it.
I only ever played one of these... Simpsons Wrestling. Even though even at the time I knew in my heart it was crap, I've got some fond memories of it
I have an arcade cabinet of the4 player beat-em-up. Love that game so much!
One of the main reasons I have my Wii hooked up, Simpsons Hit & Run.
I’m really surprised more people don’t want to see a Larry the Looter game.
Simpsons Arcade Game all day!
Hit n' Run was fun though.
Wasn't aware that the arcade game got a PS3 release. I'm guessing it's no longer available for purchase?
@LazyLombax Wow, that's awesome. What a thing to have at home!
The Simpsons Game is still one the most underrated games. I enjoed getting all the achievements when I played on 360, and was super disappointed to find out it didn't have trophies when I jump back to Playstation on the PS3.
Really loved Hit & Run. It's my favourite Simpsons game and the only one i want to see return more than anything. Really enjoyed The Simpsons Game (EAs game) too and would love to see that on PS4&5 also.
@LilianaQuinn83 I always thought the reason we haven't seen anymore is because EA have the phone game printing gold for them. So maybe they don't want another console game as it won't make money like the phone game does. They made their own Simpsons Game after Hit & Run and it wasn't as good so they wouldnt want to work with Activsion as that would be like saying Vivendi Games (now Activision) made the better game and opening those doors for them to make a sequel. They know Hit & Run is more popular than their own. They didn't even release their own game into the EA vault as far as I know so I think they are just trying to keep the games hidden to themselves so it doesn't hurt their phone money.
That's just my guess anyway but now that Disney owns it, maybe they can work on new deals.
Maybe they're worried about re-releasing Road Rage and Hit & Run due to possible lawsuits over design plagiarism. The existing settlement might not cover newer systems/ports.
I played the arcade a game a few months ago when me and a group of friends happened upon it inside a barber shop. Four 40-somethings getting to be kids again. It was awesome!
Does seem crazy that none of these games are available on PS4, PS5
Article about games unplayable on current or last gen. What is the purpose? Any Simpson game at dawn?
Why hasn't there been another Simpsons game?
I’m old enough to remember playing the arcade game in an actual arcade. It will always be #1 for me
@PenguinLtd Yeah it is — There are so many great games (like Simpsons Arcade) which are just languishing in limbo because of all the various rights holders that own a piece of it.
The Simpsons Game for PS3/X360 was an absolute banger, with some of the best writing, videogame parodies, and a very fun version of Springfield to explore. I would love a remaster or a port on modern systems, ideally with support for online coop.
I would love a collection of older Simpsons games like the TMNT collection and some kind of remaster of the PS3 and PS2 games.
